Why do I need to Eat

Thu Apr 9th, 2015 11:48 am

As I learn about behavior modification and dieting and sports nutrition, a trip I’ve wanted to take for a while is to take a group through a grocery store to talk about food.

But where do I start?! Food additives? Nutrition claims? What about “Carbs?” Fat? Protein? Food for weight loss?

A WEEK wouldn’t even cover it.

So I decided my biggest pet peeve among my exercising friends is “I’m cutting (or I’ve cut) out carbs!” UGH!!!

The other thing that drives me batty is people still on diets! DIETS NEVER WORK!!

HOWEVER, anytime we want to make a change – whether it be going to school, learning a new skill at your job, starting a family – ANY change requires SOME discipline!! If you decide you have too much body fat and you want to change that, IT’S GOING TO REQUIRE SOME A- CHANGIN! Some life-adjustments.

Can we NOT call it a diet?!!

Can we NOT say we are “depriving” our selves of things we love to eat? You wouldn’t make deprivation the theme of your new life as a mom! Or as a student. Or a new employee. It might be hard making adjustments, but KEEPING THE END IN MIND gives you motivation to continue. (A healthy child. An education. A career adventure.)

Keeping in mind the WHY… the WHY…. “WHY the hell am I doing all this?” is what you MUST do. It’s not a DIET! It’s a change that I must make because… (WHY?) “I don’t want shorten my life span by X years.” “I want to be more mobile to hike and have fun with my husband.” “I just want to look in the mirror and smile at my success, damn it!” “If I continue to get fatter, I’ll be devastated with myself! I can’t live like that!”

Anyway, going back to this trip I’ve wanted to take with all this knowledge about food and exercise… I’m putting together a talk called: “Why do I have to eat?” I thought we’d meet in a local grocery store where we can walk thru the aisles or just sit among the food and talk. It’s a Q & A, but with the conversation directing toward:
What is food?
Why starvation diets don’t work
Why deprivation diets don’t work
Exercise and food
And finally, I want the group to be able to answer with a tear streaming down their cheeks, “Why do I have to eat?”

Where the discussion will NOT GO:
NO Food politics. NO food judgement. NO radical thought about what we should/shouldn’t eat. NO DIETS.

My goal? STOP dieting! Stop deprivation diets!

Let’s talk about this!
